Contrary to surprisingly popular belief, it is not okay to use the same one mattress decade after decade. Of course, this advice varies a little when it comes to mattresses that are lightly used such as those in guest rooms or second homes. However, with regular use, it is highly recommended to change your mattress regularly.
But like most big purchases, buying a mattress isn’t something you do every day, week, month, or even year. So, it may require some planning and preparation beforehand for you to be sure you’re making the best financial decision.
So, when is the best time to buy a mattress?
Well, before we get into the timing, we’ll discuss reasons that you may need to change your mattress and why how often you’ll want to do so in the first place.
Since you can’t just stick a mattress in a washing machine—for practicality reasons and to preserve the mattress’ structure—it’s best to just spot clean and vacuum as needed. However, these methods will only go so far in removing years of bacteria, dust, and more from a surface that makes contact with our bodies for hours every day. So, keeping your home clean and fresh can be a great reason to replace your mattress.
Health & Comfort
No matter your sleeping style, even the strongest mattresses will start to wear down over time. And when this happens, you may begin to experience back, neck, and shoulder pain and other discomforts as a result of having a poor sleeping position. A new mattress will provide the comfort and support you need to get back to sleeping comfortably and pain-free.
You may simply be in need of a mattress upgrade. If you’ve been sleeping on a traditional innerspring mattress for years, upgrading to a different type of mattress can make a huge difference in the way you sleep at night. Similarly, you may have just moved out of one home and are preparing to move into another and need to get rid of the hand-me-down that has done the bare minimum to keep you going through college.
One of the most common reasons to buy a new mattress is noticing a change in your sleep quality. If you’ve started having difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep and have felt groggy in the morning despite getting the right amount of sleep at night or if you wake with pains in your neck, back, and shoulders, you may need a new mattress to improve your quality of sleep.
How often should you change your mattress?
How often you replace your mattress depends on a couple of different factors. The Better Sleep Council reminds us that the frequency of use and mattress quality both affect how often it will need to be replaced, but advises that, in most cases, a mattress will most likely have reached the end of its days after 7 years.
Additionally, the type of mattress also affects the frequency with which it should be replaced. Here are recommendations based on six different mattress types:
Innerspring ———— 5.5 years
Memory foam ——— 7 years
Airbed —————— 7.5 years
Latex —————— 8.5 years
Latex hybrid ——— 6 years
Hero Bed ———— 10 years
As you can see, a Hero Bed mattress provides up to 10 years of comfort with regular use. Because of our mattress’ unique construction, you can enjoy a decade of continued support and comfort.
When is the best time to buy a mattress?
Holidays are a great time to buy a new mattress because you can almost always be sure there will be a great deal available. For example, during Black Friday, companies sell products at incredibly discounted prices to reach sales targets and for a myriad of other reasons. Buying a mattress on Black Friday can be a great idea because you’re likely to buy it at the cheapest price at which it will ever be available.
Other big holidays such as Presidents Day, Memorial Day, and Labor Day are met with big discounts at mattress stores. Retailers plan sales on these holidays and the days leading up to them since they may fall on a three-day weekend.
Because of the holidays in certain months, some months offer better buying opportunities than others. February, May, and September are great buying months because of the holidays mentioned above, but these months are good for more than just the holidays.
In February, for example, most buyers have recovered from the financial weight of Christmas shipping and are better prepared to make a big purchase. Since mattress companies know this, they often lower their prices in competition with other stores to garner attention from potential customers.
May and other spring months mark the time when mattress companies release new mattress models and are looking for ways to get old models out of the store. This is why inventory clearout sales are popular during this time of year. However, buyers must be very vigilant at this time because prices may drop as time progresses, but if they wait too long, the mattress they’re looking for may no longer be available.
The end of September is also the end of the fiscal year for most businesses and when they’ll want to have the best possible reports to look back on. Because of this, late September can mean tons of big sales for shoppers.
You may also notice cheaper prices when a mattress store is closing or going out of business. In order for the company to make the most amount of money before shutting down, prices may be quite cheap. However, it is not recommended to purchase a mattress from a store at such a time.
The store was not doing well enough to keep the business afloat and now has to shut down. If its products were better priced, better quality, etc. customers would continue to buy and this would not have been an issue. But because you may not know why the store is closing (especially if you are a first-time buyer) and it is best to avoid purchasing and risking your quality of sleep for a good deal. In most cases, purchases during store closeout sales are final and will not allow for returns or exchanges. All in all, it’s best to buy a mattress from a reputable store with high-quality products and optional sleep trials to ensure that you get the best deal possible and are happy with your purchase.
Want to buy a new mattress?
Overall, the best time to buy a mattress is whenever you need a new one. No matter what month or season you’re currently in, you’ll probably find a good deal on a mattress. Don’t sacrifice your health and comfort in an effort to get the cheapest option. Plus, buying from an online retailer will likely be more affordable than buying from a retailer in-store as there is no middleman, no overhead costs, and no need to set the price high to accommodate for bargaining with customers when negotiating a deal.
